Undertale Album Project by jojostory
This was my submission for the Songs of Mt Ebott, Vol 1 for the Undertale Album Project! I wasn't able to post it while I was working on it because they wanted to release the art all at once, so I'm posting my WIPs from that now :)
After doing a bunch of thumbnails that I should probably track down, I settled on this composition vaguely based on the idea that the golden flowers near the beginning of the game is Chara's grave. At the same time I wanted to also show the idea that Frisk is putting Chara to rest through his actions in the Pacifist route. I'm trying to keep the same color palette as the game with the flowers and ground.
I start refining Chara's face and hair. Getting those eyes to be symmetrical was a real pain haha, I ended up copying one of the eyes so that the other would match. Lots of flipping the canvas to make sure the face is somewhat symmetrical!
I start refining Chara's sweater. I realize that this point that painting all on the same layer is goign to be a paint, so I cut and paste out the top, the flowers, the gray background, and Chara onto separate layers.
Refining the light beam! It still looks a bit strong too me, I wanted to try to go for something more soft, but oh well. I've always liked the starry look of the caves in the game, so I tried to incorporate that here too. The original purple I was going to go with seemed to clash here, so instead I used an overlay brush with some blue and yellow to create a more gentle glow.
Refining the flowers! I looked up a lot of references of buttercup flowers here... tried to make the center flowers more saturated to give a sense of focus. Added some stray petals to fill in space. I ended up lowering the flowers on Chara's head because otherwise it make Chara's head look huge. :o
Took a large brush on an overlay layer to darken the corners to create a bit more focus. Done!
